Wordweb dictionary defines a Metaphor as :
"A figure of speech in which an expression is used to refer to something that it does not literally denote in order to suggest a similarity."
Metaphors help our speech in two ways--one they embellish the language; and second they guard us from getting too flat.
The second in particular is simply a great assistance.
