Wordweb dictionary defines a Metaphor as :
"A figure of speech in which an expression is used to refer to something that it does not literally denote in order to suggest a similarity."
Metaphors help our speech in two ways--one they embellish the language; and second they guard us from getting too flat.
The second in particular is simply a great assistance.

How a guy lost his gal to Google Maps !

Google is omnipresent, name a sphere and you will find the incorporation which got its name by making minor changes to the word Googol (10 to the one hundredth power). We have Google maps, translator, labs and so on.
